Watford add to Mourinho’s woes as United slump to third loss on trot

- STEVE NAILOR

JOSE MOURINHO watched Manchester United’s problems mount as Watford striker Etienne Capoue inspired a comprehensive 3-1 win over their illustrious visitors at Vicarage Road.

Following last week’s derby defeat to Manchester City and the midweek Europa League loss at Feyenoord, Mourinho had hoped for much more from his big-spending stars.

But again too many of them were anonymous and it was hardly surprising when Capoue struck his fourth goal in six games to put the hosts in front.

Although Marcus Rashford levelled on 62 minutes with United’s first shot on target, Camilo Zuniga came off the bench to score before a late Troy Deeney penalty secured Watford’s first win over United since 1986.

Meanwhile, Harry Kane scored the winner and then left the pitch on a stretcher as Tottenham secured a 1-0 victory over struggling Sunderland.

Kane’s second of the season came to Spurs’ rescue at White Hart Lane but he was carried off in the 89th minute after Mousa Dembele and Eric Dier had also left the pitch due to injuries.

The Black Cats, who are still winless this season, were reduced to 10 men late on when Adnan Januzaj was shown a second yellow card but the sending off barely affected the contest, which Spurs dominated from start to finish.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes is coming under increasing pressure after his side continued their dreadful start to the campaign with a 4-1 loss at Crystal Palace. The result means Stoke have now conceded 14 goals in a run of four defeats from five league fixtures, piling the problems on Hughes as he seeks a way to turn their worrying start around.

James Tomkins headed home an Andros Townsend cross to give Palace a ninth-minute lead then Scott Dann also headed home to double the home side’s advantage. James McArthur grabbed the third for Palace with a slightly deflected drive in the 71st minute, and Townsend added a fourth before Marko 200 Renfield Street, Glasgow G2 3QB. email: sport@theherald.co.uk. Charlie Austin climbed off the bench to secure Southampton’s first Premier League win of the season as they edged out Swansea at St Mary’s Stadium. The striker was back among the substitutes against the Swans despite his two-goal heroics in the Europa League win over Sparta Prague on Thursday.

But having watched his team-mates spurn a host of chances to take the lead, Austin found the net just 10 minutes after coming on to snatch a 1-0 victory.
