Townsend tips Wilson for success at Warriors

Martin Anayi, the PRO14 chief executive, echoed Dodson’s views, insisting that the league had a lot of potential for growth and that CVC would help it fulfil that potential. “CVC’s show of faith has been impressive and is in keeping with their proven track record of success when it comes to sports investment, including Formula 1, Moto GP and [English] Premiership Rugby,” he said. “This partnership allows all of our stake-holders to plan for a sustainable period of growth, which will benefit the fans, the players and the game.

“We are very pleased to partner with CVC, who saw us as an ambitious, fast-paced and innovative organisation, situated across a number of core rugby nations that can deliver an increasing impact. We have been clear that we believe the Guinness PRO14 is a world-class club league that is still in its growth phase, and we are confident that it will become a major standardbearer in our sport.”

GREGOR TOWNSEND has backed Danny Wilson to prove a success as Glasgow Warriors’ new head coach.

Wilson was briefly part of Townsend’s backroom team, acting as forwards coach from August 2018 after three years in charge of Cardiff Blues.

The Englishman was named as Glasgow’s replacement next season for Dave Rennie, who is taking over the Australian national team this summer.

Townsend spent five years at the helm at Glasgow before becoming Scotland head coach in 2017 and believes Wilson can ‘build’ on the Warriors’ previous success and reputation.

He said: “We’ve known for a wee while that Danny was moving into the Glasgow job, that was all organised after the World Cup.

“He can’t wait to start that role. He’s obviously been a head coach before and a successful head coach.

“It’s a great club to coach, there’s a brilliant atmosphere at the games and a real connection between the supporters and the players.

“I know he’s been doing a lot of work since the Six Nations making sure when he does start that job the players are aligned to his beliefs, but also that he’s connected with what the club’s done in the past and what the club means to those guys in the city.”
