Neilson: Chance to shine

- DARREN JOHNSTONE

HEARTS manager Robbie Neilson admits fringe players will be given the chance to impress due the void left by those departing for international duty.

Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon and Northern Ireland pair Michael Smith and Liam Boyce will not be available for Tuesday's Scottish Cup tie at Brora Rangers and next weekend's visit of Queen of the South.

The Gorgie side are looking to move closer to sealing the Championship title with victory at Arbroath today.

Four wins from the final seven games will be enough to secure an immediate return to the Premiership and Neilson admits those on the periphery, notably back-up keeper Ross Stewart, will get a chance to play a greater role.

He said: “It will definitely be a chance for others, we'll get through this game and make a decision on it.

“In the last few weeks we've been consistent with our team selection but with the international break we're going to lose a few players so it's a chance for guys to come in.

“And then if we can do well in the Scottish Cup, we would have a number of games next month so we would have to rotate a wee bit as well.

“Ross has been doing really well for us in training and bounce games and this will give him a wee opportunity to come in and play some games.

“Michael is our only right back at the club at the moment.

“Jamie Brandon is out injured and Cammy Logan is up at Cove Rangers so we'll need to reshuffle the pack a wee bit to get somebody in that position.”

Although not unexpected, Neilson is delighted to see Gordon retain his place in the Scotland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Austria, Israel and the Faroe Island.

Neilson believes the 38-yearold will give national team manager Steve Clarke plenty of food for thought regarding the number one jersey ahead of this summer Euro 2020 finals.

Neilson added: “I am absolutely delighted for him, I think he's earned it and hopefully he gets a starting position and gives Steve some thought about who is going to be the number one going into the tournament.

“He's done it consistently right through the season, Craig's big thing was getting back playing again and he's done that.

“He's played every game that he's been available for us and has been outstanding.

"I hope he gets a start and hope he does well, I'm sure he will.”
