Hands on ... Harman Kardon Onyx
What is it? A stylish Bluetooth speaker. How will it change my life? Bluetooth speakers are sleek, simple to use and brilliantly free of ugly cable clutter. If you still have some Christmas money left – or simply need something to aspire to when that hallowed January pay cheque comes around – then you won’t go far wrong with the Harman Kardon Onyx.
The impressive features include an array of connectivity options including Bluetooth, AirPlay, DNLA, Wi-Fi, NFC and 3.5mm stereo jack. The wrapped leather and stainless steel handle makes the Onyx the focal point of most rooms while maintaining a classic speaker-esque look. Good points? Bluetooth is an ageing technology, but in speaker systems it’s relatively future- proof. The Harman Kardon Onyx with its polished build and elegant design complements the mechanism inside. As with many gadgets, the Onyx has sidestepped regular pressure buttons with LED-backlit sensors.
The built-in battery leaves no unsightly cables. It has the appearance of a squashed planet with an orbiting ring. Charging the device also gives the opportunity to re-energise any USB-based gadget via the extra port which houses the auxiliary connection and WPS (Wi-Fi protected set-up) button. The sound is superb with smooth transitions and it boasts a frequency range of between 60Hz to 20kHz. Bad points? The smartphone remote control app is a let-down as it has no volume adjusting capability or means to view battery life. The touch controls can be confusing. Best for … Hardcore music aficionados and loud music lovers. Avoid if … You baulk at spending the equivalent of a budget week in the sun for a speaker.
If portability isn’t a major requirement, then it’s probably best to look elsewhere. Score? 8/10. This is a solid and very desirable piece of technology with stunning sound.
