Edinburgh OS Landranger 66

10 miles (16km) 1-2 hours

Towpath and railway path. Mostly trafficfree gravel and asphalt, on-road links to stations at either end, mostly downhill This ride is part of the National Cycle Network route 75. It begins at Balerno High School, which can be reached via quiet roads from the stations at Curriehill or Kirknewton. Here you join the traffic-free route beside the Water of Leith, whose waters rise in the Pentland Hills and flow into the Firth of Forth.

The river is a peaceful green space where wildlife flourishes – if you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of kingfishers and otters.

At Colinton you follow the old railway line through a long tunnel, and at Slateford aqueduct the route joins the Union Canal into Edinburgh where you emerge at Fountainbridge.

From there you can follow the Route 75 signs to the Meadows and the junction of Routes 1 and 75.

Head into the city centre for Waverley and Haymarket stations.

SUSTRANS.ORG.UK Tomorrow, 2-4pm This fun event is a great way to introduce art to the little people in your life. Aimed at children aged four to 12, they’ll collect a detective kit on arrival and will spend the afternoon as art sleuths as they follow clues and attempt to solve mysteries from history. It’s free and no booking is required. Visit: www.nationalgalleries.org/portraitgallery
