WHILE every­one knows that hours spent com­mut­ing can be re­lent­lessly frus­trat­ing and dull, it is less well known that it can ac­tu­ally have an ad­verse ef­fect on health.

A study of 34,000 em­ploy­ees showed that longer com­mut­ing work­ers are 33% more likely to suf­fer from de­pres­sion than those with com­mutes of un­der half an hour.

Those with shorter jour­neys also gain an ad­di­tional seven days’ worth of pro­duc­tive time each year com­pared to those with com­mutes of more than an hour.
