-

SATURDAY Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) (Channel 4, 9pm) Hail, Caesar! (2016) (Channel 4, 11.35pm)

CIA Director Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) succeeds in shutting down the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). Subsequently, the hunters become the hunted when a shadowy organisation known as the Syndicate, fronted by Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), targets IMF for extinction. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) covertly reunites with colleagues William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and computer hacker Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) to take on their foes. Rogue Nation is a stylish and slick fifth instalment of the action-packed franchise, bolted together with brio by director Christopher McQuarrie and editor Eddie Hamilton.

Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) masterminds production at Capitol Pictures in 1950s Hollywood, keeping the tawdry secrets of his leading men and ladies out of rival gossip columns penned by twins Thora and Thessaly Thacker (Tilda Swinton). When a communist group calling itself The Future kidnaps matinee idol Baird Whitlock (George Clooney) from the set of big-budget epic Hail, Caesar! – A Tale of the Christ, Eddie races against time to pay the $100,000 ransom and keep the abduction secret from the filmmaking community. Hail, Caesar! is the Coen brothers’ screwball valentine to the golden age of filmmaking when studios nurtured, protected and controlled big-name stars.

SUNDAY The Incredibles (2004) (Channel 4, 5.25pm)

With its smart script, eye-popping visuals, thrilling action set pieces and endearing characters, the computer animated fable from the Pixar team more than lives up to its name. After causing a bit too much damage while saving the world from dastardly villains, a family of superheroes is forced to relocate and swap a life of fighting crime for suburban normality. However, Mr Incredible (Craig T Nelson) – now plain old Bob Parr – can’t cope with the monotony of working in insurance and signs up for a mysterious assignment on a remote island, unaware he is jumping straight into a trap. It’s up to his wife Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) and children to use all their powers to save him, with a little help from diminutive fashion oracle Edna Mode (director Brad Bird), who creates fetching red outfits for the entire clan.

Run All Night (2015) (Channel 5, 9pm)

For more than 30 years, hit man Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson) has outfoxed tenacious Detective John Harding (Vincent D’Onofrio) and slayed targets at the behest of mob boss Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris). Alcohol is Jimmy’s solace from his transgressions, which have cast him adrift from his son Mike (Joel Kinnaman), who works as a limousine driver. One fateful night, Mike witnesses Shawn’s reckless son Danny (Boyd Holbrook) killing an Albanian thug. Inevitably, Jimmy becomes embroiled in this deadly game of cat and mouse and he tries to protect Mike from the thugs out to silence him. Run All Night is a sleek action thriller set on the rain-lashed streets of New York in which the sins of two fathers are visited upon their sons.
