FRIDAY Fleetwood Mac: A Musical History (BBC4, 8pm)

festive special of the travelogue in which he explores countries rarely visited by tourists. He wants to know whether there is more to this area than the prospect of freezing to death or being eaten by a polar bear. Travelling across frozen wastelands, he spends a week in the largest territory, getting to grips with the Inuit hunter’s way of life – not easy for vegan Romesh. He also witnesses the erosion and resurgence of Inuit traditions and discover why alcohol is often restricted in the communities.

Telling the history of Fleetwood Mac in just an hour is something of a challenge, not least because the group changed so much from its first incarnation as a 1960s blues-rock-influenced band led by guitarist and songwriter Peter Green to the softer 1970s sound of the all-conquering Rumours. However, this programme is going to give it a go as DJ Edith Bowman narrates a brief history of Fleetwood Mac, while celebrity fans KT Tunstall, Travis frontman Fran Healy, Toyah Willcox, journalist Sian Pattenden and broadcaster Emma Dabiri pay tribute to the group and share their favourite tracks.

Victoria and Albert: The Royal Wedding (BBC2, 8.30pm)

Lucy Worsley oversees an authentic restaging of the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Aided by experts, she recreates the most important elements of the ceremony and the celebrations, scouring history books, archives, newspapers and Victoria’s diaries for the exact details of the couple’s big day in 1840. Lucy also recounts the story of Victoria and Albert’s courtship and engagement, exploring the hidden iconography and symbolism of this hugely significant wedding and revealing new insights into the pair’s relationship, both public and private.

Celebrity Mastermind (BBC1, 8.30pm)

Veteran quizmaster John Humphrys puts four famous faces in the spotlight in the first of a new series of the quiz. Laying their reputations on the line in the first programme are the BBC’s media editor Amol Rajan, Saturday Live Presenter the Rev Richard Coles, RuPaul’s Drag Race runner-up Courtney Act and Mark Lane from Gardeners’ World, who tackle questions on cricketer Shane Warne, the operas of Wagner, the Spice Girls and Dutch artist Piet Mondrian. The second round sees them tackling general knowledge questions.

Not Going Out Live (BBC1, 9pm)

The recent Inside No 9 Halloween special has set the bar very high for live episodes, so what can Lee Mack do to top it as his multi-award-winning sitcom Not Going Out goes out live? Well, there is talk of egg-juggling and knife-throwing... The plot sees Lee and Lucy (Sally Bretton) fretting in their seasonally decorated living room, although it’s not the big day itself that’s causing them problems. They’ve been strong-armed into organising a festive variety show to raise money for the children’s school (honestly, who would take on the stress of organising a live show this close to Christmas?). However, so far, they’ve only managed to book an animal impersonator, so it doesn’t look like there’s going to be much variety. Can Toby (Hugh Dennis) and uptight wife Anna (Abigail Cruttenden) be persuaded to help?

Bird Box (Netflix, from Friday)

Careers can saunter along for decades, then suddenly burst into life thanks to one project that captures the public’s imagine. That’s what happened to Danish director Susanne Bier when, in 2011, her film In a Better World won the best foreign language film Oscar. She subsequently won plaudits for her work on BBC drama The Night Manager, so big things are expected from her latest project, a post-apocalyptic chiller starring Sandra Bullock, Sarah Paulson, Tom Hollander and John Malkovich. A mysterious force decimates the world’s population, driving those who see it to commit suicide. Mother-of-two Malorie heads for the one place that may offer sanctuary but to reach it she must lead her children blindfolded on a tense and dangerous two-day journey.

The Young Offenders Christmas Special (BBC3, available now)

We catch up with Conor and Jock during a hectic pre-Christmas week. The residents of the council estate they call home have barricaded themselves in; the authorities claim they must move out in order for the estate to be renovated but those living there are worried they will never return if they are forced out. To make matters worse for the lads, Mairead is in hospital. Unsure how they can help her, they ask if there is anything she would like, setting in motion a chaotic series of events.
