GARDEN OF THE WEEK
THE WALLED GARDEN AT ARKLETON EWES, LANGHOLM, DG13 0HL
Nestled in the rolling hills of the Ewes Valley in Dumfries and Galloway, the Walled Garden at Arkleton has been transformed by artist Kate Knott into a fantastic pick your own flower garden.
The original layout of the then-overgrown secret garden was uncovered and the beds reinstated. Each year the garden changes dramatically as planting continues and the garden starts to mature.
The David Austen rose beds were the first to be planted and they provide a glorious display all summer.
The walls of sweetpeas ensure that the garden is full of fragrance and the colourful paintings on the walls add a specialness to this extraordinary garden.
Visitors are encouraged to break with the usual rules and wander the garden with a pair of scissors to snip away at the stunning array of blooms that they can take away in either jars or bigger bouquets.
The Victorian Glasshouse within the garden is currently being repaired and the team are delighted that visitors will be able to see the important conservation work being undertaken and watch as the project unfolds over the summer months.
The delightful and relaxed Shed Cafe in the corner of the garden serves delicious homemade cakes or freshly oven baked pizzas, along with hot and cold drinks all day.
The team at the garden also offers workshops in floral crown making, pressed flowers and many others. More information on workshops and courses can be found on the garden’s website.
