The Shadow In The Glass, JJA Harwood, Harper Collins, £8.99

What is the book about?

The novel follows 17-year-old Eleanor, an orphan who was raised and loved by wealthy Lady Pembroke. When Lady Pembroke died, her cruel husband made Eleanor a housemaid in what had once been her home. A fairy godmother of sorts appears to gift seven wishes; however if the seventh is used, Eleanor’s soul will belong to this mysterious guest. This new, dark take on Cinderella explores morality, identity, hope and escapism.

Who is it aimed at?

Those aged from around 14. Eleanor was a difficult character to like. As the story went on she became less relatable, with almost constant internal justification for using the wishes.

What was your favourite part? It made me think, bringing into full force the idea of being careful what you wish for and daring the reader to wonder how they would use wishes if granted to them and what consequences they’d be willing to pay.

Why should someone buy this book?

It’s scary, thought provoking and distant enough from the story we know in all the ways a twisted fairytale should be.
