-

army careers. Having completed their training at Catterick, they’re beginning their new lives in London, living close to Buckingham Palace. We see them being fitted for their greatcoats and learning how to wash their bearskins, but they’re not the the only rookies at Wellington Barracks - recent Sandhurst graduate Lt Hugh Scrope also arrives, keen to make a good impression.

It’s been an impressive couple of weeks for Amol Rajan. He recently became the first TV interviewer to speak to tennis star Novak Djokovic since he was deported from Australia following a row over his coronavirus vaccination status. Now the BBC’s media editor is back, this time chewing the fat with one of the nation’s greatest and most beloved actors. After winning a scholarship to St Catharine’s College, Cambridge, Ian McKellen made his name as a stage star in the 1960s. A relative latecomer to movie stardom, he is perhaps now best known for his roles in the blockbusting X-Men and Lord of the Rings franchises.

The Apprentice (BBC1, 9pm)

Karren Brady and Tim Campbell look on – probably in horror – as the remaining candidates tackle their latest challenge, which involves selling goods on one of the country’s leading TV shopping channels. They’ve been given a prime-time one-hour slot, but their ability to select the products that will appeal to viewers as well as their presenting skills leave a lot to be desired. To make matters even worse, one team manages to irritate the chief buyer – which could be a huge stumbling block on the road to success.

First Dates (C4, 10pm)

Sadly we’re not going to get to see the team fire Cupid’s arrows at a new batch of lovelorn souls this evening. Instead, this is a best-of compilation focusing on the programme’s most memorable double daters. Among those featured are former married couple Mandy and Stuart. The bubbly Geordies are both hoping to find new partners, but whether their prospective are comfortable with having the exes hanging around remains to be seen. Plus, twin sisters are also looking for ideal mates.

Meet the Richardsons (Dave, 10pm)

The mockumentary series which gives viewers a fictional window into the frustrated marriage of Jon Richardson and Lucy Beaumont returns for a third run. Once again, we follow the couple (who play exaggerated versions of themselves) in their home and work lives, as they raise their daughter Elsie surrounded by their celebrity friends and their Hebden Bridge neighbours. Tonight, Jon and Lucy give us a glimpse into their new home, and as Lucy does her best to impress their new neighbours, Jon has his eye on an old and unloved pub. as they secured seven medals. Visually impaired skier Menna Fitzpatrick and her guide Jen Kehoe won gold, two silvers and a bronzem while Millie Knight and her guide Brett Wild added two silvers and a bronze. Once again, there will be high hopes for this alpine skiing quartet in China this time around. Over the next nine days, Channel 4 will host more than 80 hours of Paralympics coverage, beginning this afternoon with the opening ceremony at the Beijing National Stadium. Commentator Rob Walker is joined by Paralympic sitskier Sean Rose and Channel 4 News’ Krishnan Guru-Murthy to take us through proceedings.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (C5, 8pm)

The final show in the series sees Susan and campervan Helen head to the New Forest. The starting point of her trip is perhaps the country’s most famous ancient site: Stonehenge. Susan is allowed special access into the centre of the stones, but only if she looks and doesn’t touch. The comedian then pays a visit to Winchester, once the capital of England and home to one of the largest and finest medieval cathedrals in Europe. Then, crossing into the New Forest, Susan finds a wonderfully diverse playground of trees, rivers and open heathland and is inspired to have a go at wakeboarding. Finally, Susan stops off to meet living legend – 87-year-old Sammy Miller – the 11-times British Trials motorcycle champion, who has a stunning collection of nearly 500 bikes.

Angela Scanlon heads to Manchester, where vegans Rachael and Tom are committed to transforming their first home into somewhere which reflects their sustainable lifestyle. The pair want to change their outside space into a living larder, complete with fruit and vegetables, but the unruly plot is currently a ramshackle tangle of hard landscaping and uneven levels. Award-winning garden designers Tom Massey and Steve Williams present their radical solutions to the couple.
