BOX SETS AND ON DEMAND
Luther: The Fallen Sun (Netflix, from Fri)
It’s 13 years since Idris Elba first played London-based police detective John Luther, and four since we last saw him locking horns with twisted psychopath Alice Morgan (Ruth Morgan). Unfortunately, she won’t be featuring in this new featurelength case, which made its debut on the big screen in selected cinemas last month before heading for the streaming service. Instead, Andy Serkis portrays David Robey, a billionaire who uses surveillance technology to manipulate and kill his victims. When we catch up with Luther, he’s behind bars, haunted by the fact he has been unable to prevent Robey’s crimes. But when he strikes again, our hero stages a prison break so he can hunt the villain down. Cynthia Erivo and Dermot Crowley co-star.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (Netflix, from Sun)
For some, Chris Rock is best known for being the chap slapped by Will Smith at last year’s Oscars. But they haven’t, presumably, seen any of his acting work or, perhaps more importantly, his stand-up. The latter is how Rock first made his name in showbusiness; he was mentored by Eddie Murphy, who befriended Rock after seeing his nightclub act before going on to appear in movies such as Dogma and Grown Ups, and the TV series Fargo; sitcom Everybody Hates Chris was also based on his youth. But now Rock is returning to his roots for this comedy special, Netflix’s first global livestreaming event. Which topics his gags will cover remain unknown, but many tuning in will be disappointed if that slap isn’t mentioned at some point.
MH370: The Plane That Disappeared (Netflix, from Wed)
On March 8, 2014, the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Its crew last
communicated with air traffic control (ATC) 38 minutes into the Boeing 777’s journey; the aircraft then vanished from ATC’s screens, but was tracked for another hour by military radar, having deviated from its planned flight path. After that, the plane was declared missing, with all 227 passengers and 12 crew presumed dead, and although some debris has been recovered, little else is known about what happened, and the whereabouts of those on board remains a mystery. Now Netflix is releasing a three-part documentary focusing on the various conspiracy theories to have grown up around the disaster. It also features interviews with relatives of those lost, scientists and journalists.
Moonshine (Amazon Freevee, from Fri)
Count yourself lucky - rather than getting hooked on the first season of this Canadian drama and then being forced to wait for months for the second to arrive, Freevee is making both runs, consisting of 16 episodes in total, available at the same time. Jennifer Finnigan, whose previous projects include US soap The Bold and the Beautiful and sci-fi series Salvation, heads the cast as Lidia, the eldest member of the dysfunctional Finley-Cullen family. While back in her home town for her aunt’s funeral, her marriage breaks down, her children turn against her and an inheritance sparks a feud between her and her sister. Lidia then makes the surprising decision to stick around in an attempt to reboot her life.
