BOX SETS AND ON DEMAND
Bodkin (Netflix, from Thu)
Promising new seven-part dark comedy thriller starring US actor Will Forte, who is best known for a long stint on Saturday Night Live and the sitcom The Last Man on Earth, which he created alongside taking the lead role. Here he plays Gilbert Power, an American podcaster who travels to Ireland in a bid to find out more about his roots. On arriving in the seemingly idyllic coastal town of Bodkin, he joins forces with other investigators to delve into the place’s secret past. However, their questions about the mysterious disappearance of three people only seem to inspire more queries than answers. What’s more, separating fact from fiction becomes increasingly difficult.
Siobhan Cullen, Robyn Cara and David Wilmot co-star.
Maxton Hall – The World Between Us
(Prime, from Thu)
Born in Hamburg in 1992, Mona Kasten has quickly become one of romantic fiction’s leading lights. In 2018 she published Save Me, the first in a trilogy of novels (it’s since been followed by Save You and Save Us), and it’s now been turned into a new drama series. Made in the author’s native Germany, it stars Harriet Herbig-Matten as Ruby Bell, a quick-witted scholarship student at the exclusive public school Maxton Hall. After accidentally uncovering a secret, James (Damian Hardung), an arrogant heir to a fortune, becomes obsessed with making sure she stays silent.
Hierro (Channel 4/Walter Presents, from Fri)
The first two series of a hit Spanish drama, set on El Hierro, the Canary Archipelago’s most remote island, are heading our way. The first run begins after a murder has taken place. Experienced judge Candela is taking charge of the case, which is far from being open-and-shut. The closed minds of the small local community aren’t pleased to
see her, but all the residents think they know whodunit – shady businessman Diaz, who is determined to clear his name. The second case involves drug trafficking, something Diaz may know a lot about – which is perhaps why a hitman is sent to the region to silence him for good.
Dark Matter
(Apple TV+, from Wed)
Originally intended to be a movie, this eight-part sci-fi has been adapted for the small screen by its acclaimed source novel’s writer, Blake Crouch – and if it’s only half as good as the book, viewers are onto a winner. Joel Edgerton heads the cast as Jason Dessen, a physicist and devoted family man who, while walking the streets of Chicago, is abducted and transported into an alternative take on his regular life. Although initially intrigued by what he finds, Jason becomes desperate to return to his former existence, but becomes trapped in seemingly limitless interpretations of how his life could have played out.
Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of Cesar Roman
(Netflix, from Fri)
On August 13, 2018, the remains of Honduran national Heidi Paz were discovered in a suitcase in Madrid; her arms and head have never been found, and she was identified via DNA. Prior to her death, she had been living with Cesar Roman, nicknamed El Rey del Cachopo, due to his expertise at a certain meat dish. He was also wellknown for his links to extreme right-wing parties in Spain. After Paz called time on their relationship, Roman killed and dismembered her, storing her torso.
