La Clique Noël – Part Deux

Until Jan 5, Festival Square, Edinburgh

International hit La Clique returns to Edinburgh with a new show at the Festival Square Spiegeltent on Lothian Road to headline Edinburgh’s Christmas 2018.

Mixing cabaret, new burlesque, circus and contemporary vaudeville, La Clique Noël – Part Deux runs until January 5 with a new cast after the success of its first Christmas show in Edinburgh last year.

Born at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2004, the multiaward winning production has since toured the globe to international acclaim and has a reimagined line-up of new “dysfunctional artists” as well as some favourites for this year’s seasonal edition, including the astounding fire-eater and sword-swallower Heather Holliday, aerialist Stephen Williams and mistress of mayhem, host Bernie Dieter, also the MC of Edinburgh Fringe 2018 hit, Little Death Club.

Already making her mark at this run is La Clique newcomer Veronica Thompson aka Fancy Chance, an artist who incorporates comedy, burlesque, drag, circus, cabaret, political commentary and live art as well as her signature hair hanging.

“I’ve tried to get her before but she’s been booked on another tour,” says David Bates, La Clique’s creative producer since its debut in 2004 and the man who first introduced the Spiegeltent to the Edinburgh festival in 1996.

“It’s gobsmacking what she does – she actually flies around the room by her hair. In her set there’s genuine gasp-inducing moments like I haven’t seen in many, many years. You are actually stunned by what she does. and it reminds me of that original show all those years ago.”

Now with live music fully integrated into the show courtesy of La Clique Palace Orkestra – a troupe featuring singer Kelly Wolfgram and led by Dannie Bourne, a musician who toured with Chuck Berry at the age of 23 – La La Clique Noël – Part Deux is the best version yet of the show, says Bates. “I liked the show last year but this is even a few notches above that,” he says. “I’m not being enthusiastic for the sake of it; I’m thrilled by it. The collection of artists, the calibre, is just superb. They are the creme de la creme of this kind of

line-up.”
