The Snow Wolf: A Winter’s Tale 9pm, BBC Two
In recent years there has been controversy over editorial manipulation and the inclusion of staged scenes in some natural history documentaries. (Fake nature!) But this very seasonal film is upfront about being a “dramatised” production, arranging glorious wildlife footage along with shots of habituated animals into an adventure narrative. The star is a mother wolf who gets banished from the pack she used to lead, and is forced to flee through the frozen Alps in search of safe new territory. Her attempts to evade human and animal predators along the way is complicated by an extra problem: she’s pregnant, and during the journey gives birth to a litter of six tiny, helpless (and incredibly photogenic) cubs. Be prepared for things to get emotional. Emilia Fox narrates the tale.
