Billy Connolly: Made In Scotland 9pm, BBC Two

The Herald on Sunday - Sunday Herald Life - - Tv And Radio -

Billy Connolly has been open about the impact Parkinson’s disease has had, but, when it comes to making documentaries, it seems as if he has been more heroically busy in the past few months than he has in years. This two-part film is like a bookend to his recent Ultimate World Tour for ITV: in that programme, he explored the Florida landscape he has made his latter-day home. Here, though, he returns to his roots in Scotland, and the childhood haunts and early experiences that honed the world-view that has powered his career – this first episode is almost as much about an almost-vanished Glasgow as it is about Connolly himself. Archive footage (including clips from his own earlier documentaries) help frame his memories, between contributions from fans including Val McDermid and Tracey Ullman.
