Writer and actor Tom Davis has been a hulking, unpredictable supporting presence in a number of comedies – including Murder In Successville – but might be about to move to a new level with this bright, abrasive new sitcom pilot. Set in the heart of English suburbia, he stars as Gary King, whose life is thrown into turmoil when a new neighbour (Romesh Ranganathan) plans to host a rival barbecue the same day as Gary’s own long-planned summer shindig. With Davis playing the full-on Essex man, this has a flavour all its own – imagine being trapped inside Danny Dyer’s head during an ice cream headache. Laura Checkley gets the best visual gag as Gary’s wife, Terri, and Simon Day is his imposing dad, Big Gary.
