Something will have to give unless Charles Green and Ally Mccoist can reach a truce

-

seems, but he’s started a battle with McCoist that he can’t win. Green wants success for financial gain, to sell season tickets, to win trophies, to get back up the leagues. That was his aim – to make money. From the outside, it looks like he wanted McCoist to leave rather than push him. But McCoist won’t jump.

Even if there’s no working relationship there, McCoist can outlast Green if the Rangers fans turn against the chief executive, or don’t buy season tickets. There could be a backlash against Green. It’s as if they’re now at a stage where they’re both trying to oust each other.

They need to come out and give guarantees, make a truce and go public on it. They have to tell the fans they’re both singing from the same hymn sheet if Rangers are to get over this storm.

What needs to come out publicly from Rangers now is that McCoist is there for the long-term, that Green wants to work with him, his coaching staff will be here with him and they’re all moving forward because they all want the same thing for Rangers.

That will then allow the restructuring of the staff to go ahead, but worked on together, and for them to both come out with positive statements. If this stand- off remains, something will have to give in the summer.

McCoist has done the job he needed to do by winning the title. Rangers can now wait for reconstruction to see what league they’re playing in next season, then get on with adding to the squad. It’s been hard work for him this year, and he would be the first to admit that, but he has massive popularity.

I know some Rangers fans have had a bit of a go at him, but with everything he’s had to handle this season most fans want him to keep going. If something different comes out from Green, if he forces the coaching staff to go, then he must want McCoist to jump instead of being pushed.

But I don’t think we should be pointing the finger of blame at him. His assistants let him down. If they had called the offsides, then he would have had a very good game.

It was Derek Rose and Alistair Ross who were at fault. It’s the easy way out to always blame the referee. The offsides had to be called by the assistant. Instead, just when there might have been a bit of credibility for our game, that happens.
