The Silverston­e 24 Cycling Grand Prix is a challenge for solo riders or teams of up to four people around the iconic race circuit from September 14-15. The Bike Station, the UK’s largest bicycle recycling charity, has bases in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth. The organisati­on takes unwanted or discarded bikes, regardless of age or condition, which they then patch up to sell on or reuse and recycle the parts. The newly completed Cathkin Braes mountain bike course in Glasgow will play host to events during the 2014 Commonweal­th Games.

Take a jaunt round the trails with courses from Dirt School, whose coaches include top Scottish mountain biker Rab Wardell, from £95 for a full day. Be sure to soak up the stunning panoramic views. Dirt School also offer sessions at Glentress and Innerleith­en.
