THE SCOTS HEADING TO BRAZIL

-

FIFTY-TWO Scottish competitors will be part of Team GB in Rio – the highest number for an away Games. Athletics provides the biggest contingent, including medal hopes such as Eilidh Doyle, Laura Muir and Lynsey Sharp, while swimming and rowing also have a sizeable Scottish input. Six of the 52 – a gymnast, a swimmer, two rowers and two taekwondo players – are travelling as reserves and face a frustrating wait to learn whether they will get that last-minute call to compete.

ATHLETICS

800m: Lynsey Sharp – The Commonwealth silver medallist is competing in what is likely to be one of the toughest events in this year’s athletics programme.

1500m: Laura Muir – goes into the Olympics in the form of her life, having just become British record-holder. 5000m: Steph Twell, Eilish McColgan, Laura

Whittle – Twell, a Commonwealth bronze medallist over 1500m, led the other two home at the GB trials. McColgan is quickly coming to terms with her new event after switching from the steeplechase, while Whittle came fifth in this year’s European Championships.

10,000m: Beth Potter – qualified for the team with a second place at the trials.

400m hurdles and 4x400 relay: Eilidh Doyle (pictured) – is a strong medal contender in her individual specialism and also has a vital role to play in the relay. 3000m steeplechase: Lennie Waite – secured

her place in the team with a runners-up slot at the trials. 1500: Chris O’Hare – A European Championships bronze medallist two years ago, will rely on his fighting qualities to make the final. 5000m: Andrew Butchart – like Andy and Jamie Murray from Dunblane, won the trials and has set a Scottish record this season. Marathon: Callum Hawkins, Derek

Hawkins, Tsegai Tewelde – Callum Hawkins qualified when he set a personal best in finishing eighth at the London Marathon. Tewelde was not far behind in 12th, and was selected as second fastest Briton. Derek Hawkins, Callum’s older brother, was 14th and given a discretionary place. Hammer: Chris Bennett, Mark Dry – Bennett set a PB in June and, although his mark was just outside the GB qualifying distance, he was a late addition to the team and Dry, a Commonwealth bronze medallist, was also a late selection. BADMINTON Kirsty Gilmour – won Commonwealth silver two years ago and will compete in the singles in Rio. CANOEING David Florence – competes in the C1 and C2 classes – slalom individual and pairs. He won C1

silver in Beijing eight years ago and C2 silver with Richard Hounslow at London 2012.
