‘We are currently in the fight of our lives to stop this Brexit mess’
SCOTLAND is a Remain country. You were let down – badly – by my fellow English voters in 2016.
While you voted overwhelmingly to back the enormous benefits of EU membership, we tipped the balance and voted to drag the whole of the UK out of Europe. I’m sorry.
Now, though, we are in the fight of our lives to stop this Brexit mess. The only way to solve the problems of the last referendum is via another vote – this time on the facts rather than on Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson’s fantasies.
I respect the leadership that Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, has shown in support of a People’s Vote to stop Brexit.
In leaving aside questions about Scotland’s relationship to the UK – for now – she has given us a chance of delivering for the Scottish people on the critical and urgent question of the UK’s relationship with our biggest and most important allies and trading partners.
She has also shown that it is possible to rise above the partisan melee on Brexit. Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland – all will be poorer outside the EU, and the relationships between all four will also be impoverished.
On Brexit, so far, my own Labour party has failed to provide the necessary leadership.
