CATHEDRAL SLIDE

A 40ft helter skelter will be placed inside a UK cathedral to encourage people to have “conversations about faith”.

A Norwich Cathedral spokesman said people climbing up the fairground ride, which will be installed next summer, will be treated to unique views of the cathedral, including a closer look at depictions of biblical stories on its roof.

“The hope is this rather unusual addition will give people the chance to experience the centuries-old space in a new way and open up conversations about faith,” the spokesman said.

TWIRL STASH

A man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing £200 worth of chocolate.

Police said the man was found with the chocolates, which included an enormous stash of Twirl bars, after being chased by an officer in Ashton Hurst, Greater Manchester.

The suspect had been spotted making off from a shop in Oldham, as officers were on their way to their annual Christmas dinner with the local community, Greater Manchester Police said.

ICY ORDEAL

A man survived for five hours submerged in icy water after crashing a car into a river.

Police in California found a red Ford Fusion in the Klamath River and pulled it out of the water with the help of a tow truck. When the vehicle was removed – more than two-and-a-half hours after the emergency call – they found 28-year-old Michael Finn still alive inside.

Finn told officers he believed he had crashed around five hours before the rescue. He survived by breathing from a pocket of air inside the car. He was treated for exposure.
