Where tradition meets modernity
Shepherd’s huts are fast catching up with garden rooms in popularity stakes
WHY shepherd’s huts? “They are so romantic, practical and versatile”, says cabinet maker Jack Roots. “An extra room in your garden to do anything that you want with, a summer house, garden room, office, studio, therapy space – just endless possibilities.”
Shepherd’s huts have a long history and tradition, and are part of our countryside’s heritage, their shape and form honed over many generations. They are no longer needed on the farms but recently people have noticed just how fabulous they look, and have found new uses for this classic design – especially now interest in all things garden-related is booming.
Jack is a cabinet maker/designer who has spent a lifetime in craft. He qualified as a joiner, took a design degree and then apprenticed as a cabinet maker. “It’s the combination of skills I enjoy,” he says. “Many designers struggle to make, and makers struggle to design – the world becomes easier if you have both skills. The same for joinery and cabinet making – having both is a huge advantage.”
Cost is dependent on the complexity of the design. As a guide, a basic shell would begin at £14,000 and the further designed elements add to this. Jack ensures his business remains small and craft based: he only makes a few huts a year so he can focus on quality in design and craftsmanship.
