Gordon hopes SPFL can agree on review

- IAIN COLLIN

RON GORDON admits he hopes infighting does not hold Scottish football back once Deloitte’s independent review of the SPFL is finalised this summer.

The Hibernian owner is convinced all clubs should be able to get behind the findings of the report in a bid to spark fresh life into the sport north of the border.

Backed by the SPFL, Hibs were joined by Aberdeen, Hearts, Dundee United and Dundee in funding the exercise in a bid to unlock new revenue for clubs up and down the leagues.

Initial suggestions coming from the investigation claimed that TV revenue could be almost doubled in the next five years to £50m each season.

And, while Gordon could not reveal any other findings ahead of the report being published in the coming weeks, he is confident there can be agreement on building a brighter future.

He said: “I think we have one more brainstorming meeting on one aspect and we should be in a position to present to the [SPFL] board in either June or July.

“There are some exciting things there for the league, I think. There has been a lot of collaboration and there has been good progress. I am excited about that.

“I think there is a real commitment from clubs at all levels to try and propel the game forward.”

Asked about the politics of Scottish football, the US-based businessman added: “These are the things I am learning.

“Hopefully when we present the plan – and we have kept it very simple – everyone will get behind it because these are all very good building blocks for the Scottish game.”
