Akinyemi promises net gains for Ayr United

Cinch Championship

DIPO AKINYEMI, the Championship’s top scorer, has vowed that he is just getting started.

Akinyemi netted twice as Ayr came from behind to see off Dundee on Friday night to take his tally to six goals in five games for Lee Bullen’s side.

Such figures have taken Ayr to the summit of the table with Akinyemi promising to sustain his impressive early form.

“I did tell you guys I was going to score!” he said. “I do have a target of how many goals I would like to score this season... but I am not telling you what it is!

“Yes, it is fair to say that it is in double figures but I am not saying any more than that. I have to keep that figure to myself.

“I will keep working to get better. I am positive that if I am in and around the box and the ball comes into me, I would always back myself to score.”

It has been a nomadic career for the 25-year-old – Ayr is the 14th club that the striker has been at.

However, he believes that the experience of playing in lower leagues and always on the move has helped to heighten his appetite for success.

“A lot of loan spells made me into the player I am,” he said. “I had to go and get experience and I have been in some tough positions and playing on pitches that aren’t great or in teams where we have really had to fight and I think that has really given me a hunger and a desire.

“I am grateful to be here and I think Ayr have given me that platform to go and play and I am grateful to the gaffer for believing in me.”

And the striker is confident that Lee Bullen’s side can hang on to their position at the top of the Championship.

“We are not worried about anyone else,” he said. “We are just worried about ourselves and collecting as many points as we possibly can.”
