Bulls make most of double-header to close the gap on Watsonians

- STUART BATHGATE

AYRSHIRE BULLS cut the gap on Watsonians at the top of Super6 to just two points last night with a 31- 5 home win over the Southern Knights.

The match had been declared a double-header, meaning a bonus-point win, normally worth five points, would be worth 10. And the champions – 12 points behind the Edinburgh club at the start of the day – duly took full advantage of what is surely a unique opportunity by scoring the vital fourth try early in the second half before adding a fifth late on.

The game at the Greenyards between the Knights and Bulls had been twice postponed, and with no free weekend before the end-of-season play-offs, the decision was made to allow the Millbrae match to count double.

Being deprived of a home game was tough enough on the Knights, and effectively losing twice in an afternoon has left their hopes of reaching the play-offs hanging by a thread.

In yesterday’s early match, Boroughmuir Bears fought back from 17-0 down after halfan-hour to beat Heriot’s 25-22 at Goldenacre.

Boroughmuir are now six points clear of their Edinburgh rivals in third place, and with three rounds of regular-season games to go, both should hold on to their places in the top four.

In the Premiership, leaders Currie Chieftains beat GHA 43-40 in a 13-try thriller at Malleny Park.

The Glasgow side were up 26-5 at one point in the first half, but in a game where the lead changed hands seven times, the turning point came just before the break when GHA had a man sent to the sinbin and the home team began their fightback.

Glasgow Hawks kept up the pursuit of the leaders with a 51-18 win at home to champions Marr, as did Edinburgh Accies, who won 24-20 at Selkirk.

Hawick enjoyed a thumping 52-21 victory at home to Heriot’s, and Jed-Forest defeated Musselburgh 43-34.
