NEW ZEALAND are the only major rugby nation who Scotland have never beaten, and in the 31 meetings of the teams to date there have only been two draws. Some of Scotland’s 29 losses have been narrow ones, but on the whole there have been far more comprehens­ive defeats. Here are a few of the highlights and low points from a Scottish point of view.

Scotland 0 New Zealand 0

The All Blacks had already beaten

Ireland, England and Wales on their tour, but a solid defensive performanc­e from the home side prevented them from going home with a clean sweep.

14 June 1975

New Zealand 24 Scotland 0

The so-called water-polo Test was played on a near-flooded surface, to which the home side adapted far more successful­ly.

12 November 1983

Scotland 25 New Zealand 25 Winger Jim Pollock scored a late try to seize a draw for Scotland, but fullback Peter Dods – who had earlier scored five penalties – missed the conversion attempt.

6 June 1987

New Zealand 30 Scotland 3

The All Blacks enjoyed an easy win in this World Cup quarter-final and would go on to win the inaugural tournament.

23 June 1990

New Zealand 21 Scotland 18

A week after going down by 15 points in Dunedin, that year’s Five Nations Grand Slam winners came up just short in Auckland.

20 November 1993

Scotland 15 New Zealand 51

Ten days after crushing the South of Scotland 84-5, the All Blacks did something similar to the national team. Jeff Wilson scored a hat-trick of tries on his debut.

24 June 2000

New Zealand 69 Scotland 20

Jonah Lomu scored a hat-trick as the All Blacks ran riot against the tourists in Dunedin. The teams met again a week later in Auckland and this time the Scots restricted the damage to a 48-14 loss.

Scotland 0 New Zealand 40 Faced with a punishing pool-match schedule, Scotland coach Frank Hadden rested some of his most experience­d players for this World Cup tie.

13 November 2010 Scotland 3 New Zealand 49

Stand-off Dan Parks opened the scoring for the home side but it was all downhill after that as the All Blacks ran in seven tries, all of them converted.

18 November 2017 Scotland 17 New Zealand 22

The teams’ most recent meeting saw Beauden Barrett tackle Stuart Hogg into touch in the final minute to deny what looked like a certain try. A touchdown by the full-back would have left Finn Russell with a conversion to win the game.
