Man was targeted by gunman in drive-by shooting

- HOLLY LENNON NEWS REPORTER

A MAN is fighting for his life after falling victim to a drive-by shooting by a balaclava-clad gunman in Glasgow.

The 29-year-old, named locally as Kenny Reilly, was shot through a car window while stopped at traffic lights in Bilsland Drive, near to Maryhill Road in Ruchill, on Monday.

The attacker got out of the passenger side of a black car and shot his victim, who was in the passenger side of a silver BMW.

The gunman then got back into the car and sped off in the direction of Maryhill Road.

A black people carrier was found burnt out at Craigieburn Gardens a short time later which is thought to be linked to the crime.

The victim was found with serious injuries at around 10.30pm and taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where his condition is described as critical.

The incident is being treated as a targeted, attempted murder by investigators.

Detective Superintendent Kenny Graham of Greater Glasgow Division said: “Whoever is responsible for this shooting clearly has no regard for the safety of those living in this busy residential area, and they must be caught.

“We are continuing our inquiries to establish a motive for this crime, and although we believe this was a targeted attack and that the 29 year-old man was the intended victim, we are pursuing all lines of inquiry.

“Extensive forensic examinations are ongoing in both Bilsland Drive and Craigieburn Gardens where the burnt-out vehicle was found.

“Officers are pursuing all lines of inquiry, however we do need the help and support of the local community.”

Investigating officers scoured the surrounding streets for clues while a Police Scotland helicopter searched for possible suspects in the wider North Glasgow area.

One resident living in nearby Sandfield Street said she heard a loud bang and sirens at around 10pm. The incident is the seventh shooting on city streets in just over a year.

The last victim was William Barclay, 26, who was shot at near Springburn in March.

Councillor Allan Gow said he was “shocked and saddened” by the violence on Bilsland Drive.
