Lords vote for safer trailers
THE Government has suffered a defeat in the Lords over safety standards for light trailers.
Peers backed by 215 votes to 212, an Opposition move to collate data on trailer-related accidents and press ministers to consider the need for compulsory registration and testing.
The move follows the death of Freddie Hussey, three, from Bristol, who was killed in 2014 when a trailer towed by a Land Rover came loose and hit him.
In report stage debate on the Haulage Permits and Trailer Registration Bill, Labour’s Lord Tunnicliffe said it was a “life and death” issue and the little boy may have lived if the law had been changed.
