The discovery that took half a lifetime to confirm has been recognised with the Nobel Prize. Edinburgh University-based Professor Peter Higgs’s find, known as the Higgs boson particle, was confirmed last year, nearly five decades after he first unveiled his findings. Professor Higgs shares the £775,000 Nobel Prize in Physics with Francois Englert, of Belgium, for their work discovering the building block of nature. The discovery predicted a particle, the Higgs boson, and this was found by a team from the European nuclear research facility. 10 YEARS AGO

The signature on proxy votes held by Celtic rebel leader Fergus Mccann was last night branded a forgery. At the start of the club’s annual meeting, a Celtic solicitor announced that an interim interdict had been granted at Glasgow Sheriff Court barring Mr Mccann and Mr Matthew Mcglone from speaking or voting on behalf of a shareholder at the crucial meeting. It was one more dramatic moment in 48 hours of upset for the club. Joe Jordan had earlier followed his manager Liam Brady out of the Parkhead door “as a matter of principle”.
