Deep-fried Christmas dinner on the menu at chip shop

- MAUREEN SUGDEN

IN a country known for deep frying Mars Bars, it perhaps should come as no surprise.

But one new item on the menu of a Scots chip shop has still managed to raise eyebrows – an entire deep-fried Christmas dinner.

Granted, getting all of the components of the Christmas Day meal ready at the right time can be a challenge on December 25.

So the Dunkeld Fish Bar in Perthshire has come up with a solution.

It serves turkey goujons, Brussel sprouts, carrots and parsnip fritters deep-fried in batter, served with a giant pig in a blanket – a battered foot-long sausage – and a deep-fried mince pie on the side.

The speciality supper will set back seasonal customers about £10.

Sale proceeds are going to the Dunkeld community, with a visit from Santa and his reindeer planned for local children.

Fish bar owner Scott Davie, 43, said: “You get a whole sausage and all the trimmings. It’s really popular.”

Mr Davie, who runs the shop with his wife, Shannon, said: “People think they don’t like Brussels sprouts, but they’re always overcooked.

“We do them from raw, and their natural moisture content cooks them through, and they are absolutely amazing.

“They are really, really good.” The Carron Fish Bar in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, claims to have invented the deep-fried Mars Bar almost two decades ago. In 2012, chocolate maker Mars wrote to the owners saying the product as not authorised or endorsed by Mars as it does not fit the firm’s promotion of healthy living.
