The Sex Business

Channel 5, 10pm

It’s no secret that sex sells – we see it every day in advertisements, whether we realise it or not. That’s the almost polite face of the subject – because there are others making money from it, and they are the people this new documentary series is concentrating on. Britain’s sex industry, from pornography and shops to sex workers, is a multi–million–pound industry, but one that has always caused controversy and will continue to do so – which is perhaps why it can be such a fascinating subject for programme–makers. Here, the main focus is on how people buy, sell and market sex in the UK, with testimony coming from those who earn their living through it. While some may think it’s a subject to be sniggered at, this series is very serious indeed.
