FIVE OF THE BEST
Liam Bakes
Channel 4, 8pm
Liam Charles creates a cupcake inspired by childhood memories of rice pudding and jam, and shows that the best way to entertain his nephews is to let their imaginations run wild in the kitchen. He also makes salted caramel millionaire shortbread that can be used for a game of dominoes.
Babies: Their Wonderful World
BBC2, 9pm
Paediatrician Guddi Singh looks at how children begin to become independent, with Professor Elisabeth Hill testing newly crawling babies with an optical illusion made of Perspex that looks like a sheer, vertical drop. Dr Emily Jones visits 18–month–old Amaya and attaches sensors to her to monitor the physiological changes in her body during a tantrum, while Professor Usha Goswami attaches young babies to highly sensitive brain scanners to see how the infants respond to different types of speech.
Warship: Life At Sea
Channel 5, 9pm
As Will prepares for the biggest exam of his career, intelligence reaches the ship that a group in Montenegro may be about to target the crew while the ship is in port, so personnel are recalled for their own safety. Once they are back at sea, the Commodore discusses the ongoing threat from Russia in the light of the reported chemical weapon attack in Salisbury. HMS Duncan is then ordered to head straight for Syria after a chemical weapons attack there, but progress is hampered when they are forced to make an emergency fuel and food stop.
The Sex Business
Channel 5, 10pm
It’s no secret that sex sells – we see it every day in advertisements, whether we realise it or not. That’s the almost polite face of the subject – because there are others making money from it, and they are the people this new documentary series is concentrating on. Britain’s sex industry, from pornography and shops to sex workers, is a multi–million–pound industry, but one that has always caused controversy and will continue to do so – which is perhaps why it can be such a fascinating subject for programme–makers. Here, the main focus is on how people buy, sell and market sex in the UK, with testimony coming from those who earn their living through it. While some may think it’s a subject to be sniggered at, this series is very serious indeed.
