THREE poets share the first prize in the 2018 James Mccash Scots Poetry Competition, run jointly by The Herald and Glasgow University. Here is Ann Mackinnon’s response to the theme “Destinations”.
POSTCAIRDS FAE MUCK
Efter a sair trauchle I’ve made it. The boat took a fair few birls afore it goat intae the harbour.
The hoose is hamely and the fuid is rare. I’m gled tae get ma heid doon an no be shooglin aboot on the watter.
I’ve taen a stravaig tae the graveyaird an fun his hinnermaist airt.
The stane needs a bit o wark.
I broucht ma tools the day.
I’ll scart oot the letters an re-pent. Hope it’s no too roarie.
It’s a sair fecht fur the weather is gie coorse and cloors ma heid as I courie doon tae ma wark.
Aince it’s aw scoored oot
I’ll re-pent the wirds, feenish it aff. That’ll dae the morn.
A brichter day aw the gither so I leave his epitaph glentin – Gus am bris an latha.
Gus am bris an latha (Gaelic) = Until the day breaks.
