Tolls scrapped over Severn

-

MOTORISTS can travel for free for the first time on the two Severn bridges as the tolls are scrapped from today.

The scrapping of the charge comes as thousands of people are expected to journey home for Christmas from England into Wales.

Charges on the Severn Crossing have been in place since 1966, when the fee was two shillings and sixpence – 12.5p in decimal currency today.

Charges were then introduced on the second bridge when it opened in 1996.

The current fee for a car crossing from England into South Wales is £5.60 – regular commuters could save more than £1,400 a year.
