Team GB star up for Notts ac­co­lade

GREAT Bri­tain golden girl He­len Richard­sonWalsh’s year to re­mem­ber could yet land her an­other ac­co­lade.

Richard­son-Walsh, a mem­ber of Team GB’s gold-medal win­ning hockey squad at the Rio Olympics, is among five nom­i­na­tions for Sport Not­ting­hamshire’s 2016 Sportsper­son of the Year.

The 35-year-old laid the foun­da­tions of her dec­o­rated ca­reer as a seven-year-old with West Bridg­ford Hockey Club.

She joins gym­nast Becky Downie, ice skater Elise Christie, touch rugby star and Boots HC mem­ber Kate Hyde and ta­ble tennis jet Sam Walker in vy­ing for the top hon­our.

The awards, into their 25th year, recog­nise the best in Not­ting­hamshire sport – from the grass­roots to the elite lev­els.

Vol­un­teers, coaches and com­mu­nity cham­pi­ons are also cel­e­brated at the gala event, set for Not­ting­ham Con­fer­ence Cen­tre on Fe­bru­ary 1.

Boots HC are well rep­re­sented among the nom­i­na­tions.

As well as Hyde, their men’s XI (team of the year), Laura Ma­son (vol­un­teer), Phil Rhodes (com­mu­nity coach) are also short­listed.

Bee­ston HC’s un­der-18 girls squad is among those up for the ju­nior team of the year gong.
