Team GB star up for Notts accolade
GREAT Britain golden girl Helen RichardsonWalsh’s year to remember could yet land her another accolade.
Richardson-Walsh, a member of Team GB’s gold-medal winning hockey squad at the Rio Olympics, is among five nominations for Sport Nottinghamshire’s 2016 Sportsperson of the Year.
The 35-year-old laid the foundations of her decorated career as a seven-year-old with West Bridgford Hockey Club.
She joins gymnast Becky Downie, ice skater Elise Christie, touch rugby star and Boots HC member Kate Hyde and table tennis jet Sam Walker in vying for the top honour.
The awards, into their 25th year, recognise the best in Nottinghamshire sport – from the grassroots to the elite levels.
Volunteers, coaches and community champions are also celebrated at the gala event, set for Nottingham Conference Centre on February 1.
Boots HC are well represented among the nominations.
As well as Hyde, their men’s XI (team of the year), Laura Mason (volunteer), Phil Rhodes (community coach) are also shortlisted.
Beeston HC’s under-18 girls squad is among those up for the junior team of the year gong.
