I CAN well understand that some of our international players need a break after the Olympics and there may be a disparity in the amount of rest each individual may need.
But how come some players have been playing in the National League – or in Holland – almost straight after the Games, while others appear simply to have been enjoying the media merry-goround following their success in Rio?
I am not saying they shouldn’t make the most of it, but isn’t it time that their central contracts included some commitment to club hockey?
If England Hockey are serious about a National League and gaining some decent sponsorship, our best players need to play in it. Otherwise we might as well forget about it as a spectacle – and a pathway to international selection. ED CUMMINGS

I’m not sad enough to add up the number of miles covered by each team but surely a division which included Slough, Canterbury, Sutton Coldfield, East Grinstead, Holcombe, Reading, Birmingham
University and Buckingham should have been played further south?
I know Bowdon will bleat but surely it would be cheaper to cover their travel and hotel expenses and give all the other sides, and their supporters, a shorter journey.
