The Hockey Paper - - FEATURE|OPINION -

I CAN well understand that some of our international players need a break after the Olympics and there may be a disparity in the amount of rest each individual may need.

But how come some players have been playing in the National League – or in Holland – almost straight after the Games, while others appear simply to have been enjoying the media merry-goround following their success in Rio?

I am not saying they shouldn’t make the most of it, but isn’t it time that their central contracts included some commitment to club hockey?

If England Hockey are serious about a National League and gaining some decent sponsorship, our best players need to play in it. Otherwise we might as well forget about it as a spectacle – and a pathway to international selection. ED CUMMINGS

THE short indoor season is almost over already – just the finals to go.

I’d have loved to have gone to the women’s Premier Division one weekend, but, seriously, Telford?

I’m not sad enough to add up the number of miles covered by each team but surely a division which included Slough, Canterbury, Sutton Coldfield, East Grinstead, Holcombe, Reading, Birmingham

University and Buckingham should have been played further south?

I know Bowdon will bleat but surely it would be cheaper to cover their travel and hotel expenses and give all the other sides, and their supporters, a shorter journey.

If nothing else, think of all those carbon emissions. SARAH FLITWICK via email
