Dream Team

The Hockey Paper - - FEATURE - DANNY HALL The former England and Great Britain striker selects a talentpacked XI he’d relish watching play together.

Goalkeeper Nick Taylor (Guildford & GB)

This could easily have been Simon Mason, as he is a GB legend, but I have chosen to go with my long time Guildford team-mate, Nick Taylor. Similar in size to Mason and equally capable of match winning performances.

Right-back Ben Hawes (England & GB)

A quality right-back with bags of skill. I played against him a number of times and always relished the challenge. He could pick great passes with huge aerials and was a top corner flicker.

Centre-backs Martin Haner (East Grinstead & Germany)

Mr Consistent who won Olympic gold with Germany. I played with Martin at EG and his quality was plain to see. He had a massive desire to win and an ability to control the game from the back. He was a great corner flicker too.

Jon Wyatt (Reading, England & GB)

I played with him for England and GB and against him at club level. A great defender with a massive reach and also the ability to hit 50 or 60-yard passes direct to the forwards.

Left-back Adam Harper (East Grinstead)

Such a solid left-half with the ability to win the ball in the tackle when it looked like he was beaten. He always played well in the most important games.

Right-wing Russell Garcia (England and GB)

One of the best, I played with Russell early in my international career. His speed when in possession was incredible and he could ghost past players. He was regularly the best on the pitch.

Centre-mid Glenn Kirkham (East Grinstead, England & GB)

Mr Reliable. I loved playing in the same sides as Glenn. He literally never gave the ball away and always looked to find me with a pass as soon as he could, without risking losing possession of course. He always seemed to have so much time on the ball.

Left-midfield Ashley Jackson (East Grinstead, England & GB)

The most skilful player I ever played with. He could cover the ground with such pace, and on his day it was impossible to get the ball off him. He also read the game very well and understood the leads that I used to make better than most. A great drag flicker too.

Right-forward Barry Middleton – (East Grinstead, Holcombe, England & GB)

He has great skill and pace, and always found the quickest, simplest way to get to the opposition D. When I played with him, I always felt we were going to win.

Centre-forward Rob Thompson (England & GB)

Rob was CF when I broke onto the international scene and I learnt loads from him. His speed in getting the shot away was second to none and his composure in the D was enviable. He was also amazingly calm in pressure situations.

Left-forward Mark Pearn (East Grinstead, England & GB)

Up there with Jackson in terms of natural talent. He moved to midfield halfway through his career. I’ve kept him up front in my team as I think he was a top, top goal scorer, but also loved when he threaded passes through from midfield.
