Quek next to receive top honour
ANOTHER day, another outfit for hockey gold medallist-turnedmedia darling Sam Quek as she picked up her MBE from the Prince of Wales last week.
She was at Buckingham Palace in the company of athletes including cyclist Ed Clancy, who received an OBE, and two Paralympians, canoeist Emma Wiggs and cyclist Jon-Allan Butterworth.
Her family were there, too, to celebrate the occasion, with Quek’s Twitter feed suggesting they headed from the Palace to Jermyn Street in London for a slap-up meal.
Her busy post-Olympic life has been well documented, especially her fourth-place finish in the ITV show I’m a Celebrity, while she is also working for LFCTV, the television channel of her beloved Liverpool Football Club.
Her latest role is as Ladies’ Day ambassador for the Grand National Festival at Aintree on April 7 and she told Hellomagazine: “My family are into horse racing and we have some horses of our own, but I’ve never been to a Grand National as I’ve always been playing hockey or been away with the team.
“Even before I was asked, I’d been thinking, ‘I have got to go to Aintree one year’. Then I got this opportunity, which is amazing.”
She described her MBE, meanwhile, as “an incredible morning surrounded by so many incredible people.”
