How to survive this Conference

- Andrea Leadsom

Conference season is here and after last year’s break I’m feeling renewed enthusiasm for the return to Manchester! This will be about my 18th Conservative Party Conference, so I’m sharing my “top tips” to make the most of the time. CHECK OUT THE PROGRAMME BEFORE

YOU GO: Highlight the main hall and fringe events that look interesting. You can even plan for free food throughout! (If you don’t mind curled up sandwiches and warm wine…)

PLAN AHEAD TO GET A SEAT: With so much happening, it can be easy to miss speeches on the main stage – check out the best spot for getting a good view. DON’T FORGET THE EXHIBITION SPACE: From charities to businesses, “Conservative Friends of…” groups to the party’s stands. My claim to fame a few years ago was being the fastest MP to join two pieces of pipe together at the Pimlico Plumbers stand. And a great Insta photo sitting on a tractor….

CONFERENCE PACKING ESSENTIALS: Back up phone battery, business cards and smart wardrobe. The first time my son came to conference age 18 I told him it would be “smart casual”. But actually it’s not – suits and smarts are the order of the day – that bad advice cost me an urgent new blazer…

THE YOUTH ZONE: A Conference highlight for me. Here, the party’s younger members debate some of the issues that really matter – job opportunities and a home of your own, to highlight just a couple. It’s also a great place to meet with younger members from across the country.

COMFORTABLE SHOES: Maybe the top tip of all; there’s a lot of standing up. And concealer for those bags under the eyes – no early nights at Conference! FINALLY – SELFIES: Make a note of who you want those photos with and be bold! Have fun and see you there.
