Service of Thanksgiving to be held for James Brokenshire
A Service of Thanksgiving for James Brokenshire MP will be held in St Margaret’s Church at 12 noon on Monday 9 May 2022. Brokenshire was a Conservative MP for 16 years, sitting first for Hornchurch and then for Old Bexley and Sidcup. He served in government under three prime ministers: as secretary of state for Northern Ireland; secretary of state for communities and local government and minister for security and immigration. He also had responsibility for security at the 2012 Olympics and for counter-terrorism policy.
He was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017 and died in hospital in October 2021. He led calls for a national screening programme for lung cancer and, in April 2018, used a parliamentary debate to call for a national programme to improve poor survival rates. Paying tribute, Boris Johnson described him as a “gentleman” who “commanded respect” across the House.
Those who wish to attend can register by visiting https://jamesbrokenshire.eventbrite.co.uk in their online browser. Members of the congregation are requested to be seated by 11.45 am. The service will last one hour and there is no requirement to wear dark colours.
