At this time of year, good Christians are supposed to ponder and celebrate the hope of salvation. And which group of people could this benefit more than the occupants of SW1? But that’s done; Easter is over, the choccy eggs have been munched, and it would be remiss of Mrs C not to return to her usual scandal scribbling. So, here’s what’s piqued my interest…
Westminster is far too often blighted by petty quarrels and catty interactions between parliamentarians and staff from opposing parties. As such, Mrs C always welcomes displays of cross-party kindness and comradeship. She was therefore delighted to see this kind of model behaviour on full display at Laura Kuenssberg’s SW1 leaving do at Circa Embankment. Living it up on the dance floor before locking lips in full display of bash attendees, a Labour and Tory adviser showed Westminster how cross-party collaboration has the potential to blossom in true millennial fashion. Even Mrs C’s icy heart couldn’t help but be a little warmed.
Speaking of Laura K, there can be no more hilarious a farrago than the search for her replacement. How many BBC executives does it take to get a pool of candidates down to the only one who ever really made sense? It transpires that, having successfully knocked out the reporters who were good at journalism but deemed poor in front of the camera, W1A’s finest minds then got rid of others who were good in front of the camera but hadn’t broken a scoop in years. This left a desperate Auntie secretly reopening applications to allow much-loved Chris Mason a tilt at the crown, though the talk was that Tim Davie still yearned for a so-called “blue sky candidate”. Would a former stint as an adviser and confidant to Evgeny Lebedev have made one a rogue enough choice?
Finally, as a lover of all things mad and messy, Mrs C pays her respects to the Telegraph journo who had their parliamentary pass taken off them by House authorities. It is a relief to learn the writer in question often works their magic from home in any case and as such hopefully does not feel too hard done by.
