Funeral held for veteran lobby journalist Rob Gibson
Journalists joined friends and family at the funeral of Rob Gibson, a former political editor of the Daily Express, following his death in April aged 74. More than 100 people attended, including past and present reporters from the Press Association, The Sun, The Telegraph, Guardian, Daily Mail, Express, Star and the BBC.
Gibson started his journalism career as a tea boy at the Dorset Evening Echo, before joining the Bristol Evening Post and later the Western Daily Express in Cardiff. He worked at Fleet Street News Agency in the
1970s, followed by PA. He then brought his speedy shorthand skills to the Daily Star and the Daily Express, where he was political editor until the early 1990s. Gibson started the parliamentary news service Gallery News, which he edited until he fell ill in 2016. He also served as chair of the Parliamentary Press Gallery.
The funeral featured a tribute written by former colleague Peter Hooley, who said Gibson was known as “Fleet Street’s silver fox”.
The devoted family man leaves behind wife Ann, sons James and Alexander, daughter Katie and grandson Edward.
