Big Ben resumed normal service on Remembrance Day
Big Ben’s regular service began again on Remembrance Day, with the bells of the Elizabeth Tower and Big Ben starting ringing at 11am to begin the Two Minutes of Silence. Big Ben’s normal service has been disrupted since conservation works started in 2017. However, the bells have continued to toll on each Remembrance Day and New Year’s Eve. Big Ben also tolled at one-minute intervals during key points of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
The bells struck 11 times to begin the two minutes of silence on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. They chimed along with other bells across the country to commemorate those who lost their lives in the two world wars and later conflicts. Visuals of falling poppies were projected onto the Tower, to mark the first Remembrance Sunday since the death of the late Queen.
