SKIRT THE ISSUE

Whatever your favourite style – pleated, pencil, asymmetric, the list goes on – Sarah Young says these wardrobe saviours are a sure-fire way to make it through changing seasons

If you’re tired of wearing jeans and chunky sweaters, fear not because the new season is almost upon us. Until then it’s time to tackle notoriously tricky transitional dressing.

It can be difficult to know what to wear during this period, and while a skirt might seem an unlikely option, the quickest route to looking stylish this season is pairing your favourite midi or mini with a pair of boots. Let’s take a look at some of the best skirts on offer and how you can wear them right now.

Pleated Satin Skirt, £34.99, H&M

For a skirt that you can wear all year round we suggest investing in a mid-length pleated style like this one from high-street favourite H&M. Made from satin and designed in navy with a delicate floral print, the sharp pleats help create texture and volume as you walk while the smooth, flexible waistband makes it easy to tuck in T-shirts or blouses.

Wear yours with a simple black roll-neck and high-heeled boots for a look that will take you from day to night.

Twill Asym Wrap Skirt, £29, Topshop

Mini-skirts are enjoying something of a revival right now, with hemlines getting shorter on the red carpet, front rows and on the catwalk – but are they really practical?

A style that you can wear now and when it warms up, the trick here is to pair skimpier lengths with tights or over-the-knee boots. We like this Twill Asym Wrap Skirt from Topshop which, while certainly lacking in length, becomes cold-weather ready when worn with a half-tucked chunky knit.

Midi Skirt With Lace Trim, £25.99, Zara

Polka dots are big news this season and next, so this skirt from Zara proves a wise investment. Designed with a high-waist, midi length and lace-trimmed hem it promises to win you serious style points without even having to try. For a daytime look wear yours with a sweater and switch to a camisole and heels for the evening. We also think this would look top dollar when paired with clashing prints and a splash of colour.

Pleated Midi Skirt, £59, & Other Stories

Printed blooms are a fashion mainstay, and while it can be tempting to dial down bright colours with neutrals, we think the transitional period is the perfect opportunity to inject your wardrobe with a little sartorial sunshine. This flowy, pleated option from & Other Stories is seriously chic and will serve you well now worn with a t-shirt and cardigan, and in warmer times and climes with a bodysuit and slip-on mules.
