Stained glass window honours Florence Nightingal­e

A new stained glass window has been installed at Romsey Abbey to mark the bicentenar­y of Florence Nightingal­e’s birth. Artist Sophie Hacker has created The Calling Window, which depicts the moment the founder of modern nursing said she was called by God. A service had been planned in May to dedicate the window to mark the 200th anniversar­y of her birth but the event had to be postponed because of the Covid-19 outbreak and will now be held next year.

Council accidental­ly hands out used virus tests

Birmingham authoritie­s mistakenly handed out used coronaviru­s swab kits to students as part of the city’s “drop and collect” service, it has emerged. About 25 kits, which had already been “sealed and snapped”, were given to residents along Tiverton Road in Selly Oak, close to the University of Birmingham, on Tuesday. Birmingham City Council said there was “no risk of contaminat­ion” and that the incident was now being reviewed.

NHS trust apologises over restraint of elderly man

An NHS trust has offered an unreserved apology to an elderly patient and his family after they accused hospital staff of restrainin­g him 19 times in order to forcibly administer treatment. East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust admitted that care for the man, who has dementia, “fell far short” of what patients should expect. The 77-year-old had been admitted to the William Harvey Hospital last November for urinary retention problems.

Man shot dead in west London

A 23-year-old man has died following a shooting in Hayes, west London. He was found in Austin Road shortly before 10pm on Tuesday and treated by paramedics, but they pronounced him dead not long afterwards. A burnt-out car was recovered a few miles from the shooting, the Metropolit­an Police said. Two men aged in their twenties have been arrested.
