Power cuts on St Vincent after another eruption

Another volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of St Vincent has triggered massive power outages and limited water supplies. The La Soufriere volcano on the island’s northern tip erupted at least twice on Friday, shooting ash 33,000 feet in the air, and again yesterday.

The National Emergency Management Organisation of St Vincent and the Grenadines wrote on Twitter that the “majority of the country [is] out of power and covered in ash” following “another explosive event”.

In an address broadcast by local radio station NBC News, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves urged people to “save water”, warning that supplies are “limited”. Mr Gonsalves also encouraged people to wear masks as it’s “difficult to breathe” because of the amount of ash blanketing the island. Nobody has been reported hurt or killed as a result of the eruptions.

Twelve-year-old shot while out walking in New York

The boy, who has not been identified by the authorities, is believed to have been fired upon as two groups fought close by, although it was not immediately clear whether he had been accidentally caught in the crossfire or intentionally fired upon by one of the groups. The child, who was taken to Maimonides Medical Centre is expected to survive the shooting. Police at the scene managed to collect a number of shell casings, but have not yet mane any arrests.

Family of Ohio teen crushed to death receive $6m

The family of a Ohio teenager who was crushed to death by the seat of a minivan after emergency responders failed to find him in time has been awarded a $6m (£4.4m) settlement.

Kyle Plush, 16, used voice activation to twice call 911 in April 2018 after a freak accident in the minivan he drove to school in Cincinnati left him squashed behind a passenger seat in the car park of his high school.

In one of the calls, in which he gave his location and make and model of the Honda Odyssey, he said: “I probably don’t have much time left, so tell my mom that I love her if I die.”

Two police officers allegedly searched the car park but did not find him. Kyle’s father Ron discovered his

body hours later when he did not return home from school, and later sued the city for wrongful death. On Friday, following a lengthy legal battle, the city awarded the Plush family $6m; the second largest settlement in the city’s history, as reported by The Cincinnati Enquirer.

As part of the settlement, the city has pledged to improve its 911 call centre, including spending $250,000 hiring experts to evaluate changes over five years, and publishing six-monthly reports available to the public.
