Bullocks takeover town
Seven wandering bullocks wreaked havoc on unsuspecting villagers and their gardens after tthey escaped from their field. The young “lawn bandits” made the most of driveways in the market town of Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire. BBC journalist David Harrison photographed the livestock making their way around the town. Sharing the images on Twitter, Mr Harrison said: “Cow chaos on Woodlands Road in Beverley this morning. At least 7 cows have managed to get themselves very lost & are now tearing apart lawns.” He added: “They’ve run out of grass on Woodlands Road, so they’re now having a jaunt up to Atkinson Way. Fewer lawns, but the lamp posts seem popular for a good scratch.”
However, their big day out came to a close after they were rounded up by Zowie Bell, the neatherd who looks after the livestock at Beverley Westwood – that is, all except one. Sharing a video of the lone member of the group walking across the green, Mr Harrison said: “Ah, one stray cow hasn’t quite got the memo that
they’re all off home. This is the cow equivalent of going to the bar and returning to the dance floor, with your mates nowhere to be seen.”
Luton airport mass brawl leaves three seriously injured
Three passengers were taken to hospital with serious injuries and 17 were arrested after a mass brawl erupted in the departure lounge of London’s Luton airport on Friday. The fight, which started in the postsecurity airside zone at about 8am, sent others scurrying for safety as punches and kicks were thrown by passengers between duty free shops and restaurants. Video posted to social media showed blood spots on the floor of the north London terminal, which is popular with budget airlines including Wizzair and Easyjet. At least a dozen were seen involved in the violence as others could be heard shouting and pleading for the violence to stop.
An airport spokesperson told The Independent: “We are shocked and saddened by this incident. We take a zero tolerance approach to violence and continue to assist the police with their enquiries. We would like to apologise to any passengers affected.” Bedfordshire Police said it was investigating the brawl.
Prince Charles praises Royal British Legion
The Prince of Wales has praised the Royal British Legion (RBL) for its support to the armed forces in a video message to mark the charity’s 100th anniversary. The RBL celebrated its centenary yesterday, in an event that will be marked with the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph in London. A special RBL centenary coin was also used in honour of the anniversary and was on show for the coin toss at the FA Cup Final between Leicester City and Chelsea at Wembley yesterday. In his video message, Prince Charles said: “There are few organisations which hold a place at the heart of society in the way the RBL does. For 100 years, the RBL has been a constant, through the annual Poppy Appeal, leading the nation in remembrance, and providing a life-long commitment to every veteran and their families.” He went on to thank all those in the RBL for their dedication to the armed forces community.
Mayday! UK set for one of its wettest months on record
More rain showers are forecast for the week ahead, setting the scene for what could be one of the wettest Mays on record. By Friday there had been 91 per cent of the expected rainfall for the entire month, with 63.5mm having fallen already. The wettest May on record was in 1967, when 131.7mm of rain fell across the UK. Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said even if the record is not broken, it will be a “notably wet month”. He said: “If you were to extrapolate what we’ve had so far and say the second half of the month was similar to the first, then you would probably be challenging a record wet May. On the basis that a fair amount of rain is probably quite likely over the next couple of weeks, it’s probably going to be up there.”
Tomorrow, when pubs and restaurants can reopen indoors in England, will be a day of sunshine and showers, he said. “It’s sunglasses one minute and umbrellas the next,” he added. There are likely to be heavy showers with a risk of thunder “up and down the country”, he said. He added: “So if you can go in, it might be the best option.”
