Turing £50 banknote enters circulation
The Alan Turing £50 banknote has started to enter circulation, coinciding with the Bletchley Park codebreaker’s birthday. The new polymer Bank of England note will become available in bank branches and at ATMs in the coming days. Often considered to be the father of computer science, Mr Turing played a pivotal role in breaking the Enigma code and his legacy has had a lasting impact on the way we live today. The Enigma enciphering machine, adopted by the German armed forces to send messages securely, was believed to be unbreakable.
Security guard killed nine cats in spree of attacks, court told
A security guard is accused of killing nine cats and injuring seven more in a string of attacks in Brighton that left police stumped for months, prosecutors say. Detectives received more and more reports of beloved pets being seriously injured or killed in suspicious circumstances in 2018 and 2019 but nobody was caught in the act. A breakthrough in the gruesome mystery came when a CCTV system set up by an owner of a different slain cat appeared to capture a fresh attack on camera, a court heard. Steve Bouquet, 54, from Brighton, East Sussex, previously pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of criminal damage in relation to cats and one count of possession of a knife. The shopping mall security guard did not appear at Chichester Crown Court yesterday, and the trial went ahead in his absence.
Former prison officer jailed for murder of Emma Faulds
A former prison officer who murdered his friend and hid her body in a remote Scottish forest has been jailed for life and will serve a minimum of 20 years behind bars. Ross Willox killed Emma Faulds after arranging to party with her at his home in Monkton, Ayrshire, on Sunday 28 April 2019. Ms Faulds was reported missing by her family on 30 April 2019, two days after she was last seen. Her body was found about six weeks later in Glentrool Forest, in the Galloway Forest, Dumfries and Galloway, after a major search involving specialist officers and search dogs. Ross Willox, 42, had denied the charges but was found guilty of murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow in May. He was sentenced to life and told he must serve a minimum of 20 years when he returned to the court for sentencing yesterday.
Tinder to introduce a ‘possibly’ swipe option
The CEO of Tinder has said the app’s trademarked “swipe left” and “swipe right” match-making method was no longer working
for people who have become accustomed to dating in lockdown. As virtual dating became more common for single people during lockdown, Jim Lanzone said it observed that people prefer getting to know others better online before deciding to match with them. In an interview with the BBC, Lanzone said the dating app will roll out new changes that feature more “holistic” profiles and will allow users to “swipe possibly”. This preference was especially evident among Generation Z users, who are in their late teens and early 20s. This demographic makes up more than half of Tinder’s user base.
