Sunak shuns pleas for climate crisis reparations
World is on ‘highway to hell’ over emissions warns UN chief
Rishi Sunak has dealt a blow to the countries hardest hit by the climate crisis by shunning appeals for reparations for the natural disasters caused by pollution. Demands for a fund were discussed at Cop27 yesterday but the PM made no reference to it in his speech, instead recommitting to a 2020 pledge of £11.6bn for climate funding over five years while tripling Britain’s contribution to resilience measures. However, Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon took the symbolic step of committing £5m to a “loss and damage” fund, urging other countries to follow suit.
