Zelensky hails ‘historic day’ as Ukraine retakes southern city

Jubilant residents welcomed Ukrainian soldiers into the centre of Kherson yesterday after the withdrawal of Russian forces, marking a major victory for Kyiv over Moscow. “Today is a historic day,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said. “We are getting the south of the country back.” Yuri Sak, a senior adviser to the Ukrainian defence ministry, hailed the return to the key southern city as an “important moment for our morale and our fight”.
